The flooding of familiar and violent images becomes code. Black dots are heat-burned onto sensitive paper and cut to the size of matchboxes. Each box contains a single match. Together, the boxes form a surface: a topography of entangled wars. From the Sonderkommando’s camera to a smartphone screenshot, the image of the thermal-printed dots slowly fade, while the match stands ready for its sole purpose. Tall memorial candles, dead bees, and pigeons in the crack of a reinforced safe-room window appear as traces. Within this space, seeing no longer guarantees knowing. The processing and loss of visual information generates a new relationship to images and memory – one that is preserved through its dissolution.
